Frances Louisa Clayton was a Minnesotan who followed her husband to fight in the Civil War. Under the alias Jack Williams, she served in Missouri artillery and cavalry units. Clayton took up swearing, drinking, and tobacco to fit in with the boys. According to stories she also stepped over her husband and kept fighting when he was killed at Stone's River. Clayton was one of hundreds of women who fought in the Civil War.
